Brevard County Opioid Funding and Medication Assisted Treatment Agencies 2023-2024

The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners’ Housing and Human Services Department invited proposals from qualified agencies to provide services for Brevard County residents in line with the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners approved Opioid Misuse Abatement Plan. The areas of focus include warm handoff services, Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), and marketing and educational strategies addressing opioid use disorders. The primary objective of the Request for Proposals was to find qualified agencies to develop both a marketing and education strategy and Medication Assisted Treatment, ensuring both align with the Brevard County Opioid Misuse Abatement Plan. Applications were received on October 10th and 11th, 2023.

The following listed agencies were awarded based on their submitted proposals and the scoring process which was overseen by the Recommendations Sub Committee of Together in Partnership.

What is Medication Assisted Treatment?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a treatment approach that combines medications with behavioral therapies and counseling to treat substance use disorders. It's also known as a "whole patient" approach. MAT can help with opioid use disorder (OUD) by relieving physical cravings, Blocking the euphoric effects of opioids, Normalizing brain chemistry, reducing substance cravings, and preventing relapse.

Naltrexone (Vivitrol) is a medication used to treat both opioid and alcohol use disorders. The injectable extended-release form of the drug (Vivitrol) is administered once a month and blocks the effects of opiates and alcohol.

Buprenorphine is used to help individuals reduce or quit their use of heroin or other opiates, such as pain relievers like morphine. Medications such as buprenorphine, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, provide a whole-client approach to the treatment of opioid dependency. When taken as prescribed, buprenorphine is safe and effective.

Methadone is a medication used to help individuals reduce or quit their use of heroin or other opiates. It has been used for decades to treat people who are addicted to heroin and narcotic pain medicines. When taken as prescribed, it is safe and effective. It allows people to recover from their addiction and to reclaim active and meaningful lives.
