Environmental Remediation and Compliance

The objective of the Environmental Remediation and Compliance Section is to protect and restore Brevard County’s groundwater and drinking water supplies through proper management and disposal of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and petroleum products.

Section Functions

The Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department (NRMD), Environmental Remediation and Compliance (ERC) Section, is currently contracted with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to inspect all regulated petroleum storage facilities in Brevard County and Indian River Counties for compliance with Chapters 62-761 and 62-762, F.A.C. and to oversee cleanups of petroleum contamination in Brevard, Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee Counties in accordance with Chapter 62-780, F.A.C., the contaminated site cleanup criteria rule.

In addition, using fees generated by Business Tax Receipts, the ERC Section also inspects potential and known generators of hazardous waste as mandated by F.S. Section 403.

Section Duties

  • Oversight, Review, and Remediation of Petroleum Contaminated Facilities within the five (5) FDEP contracted Counties.
  • Train all compliance staff on how to provide cost effective and efficient tank inspections.
  • Educate and assist facility owners and operators on complying with State and Federal rules to reduce the number of violations.
  • Educate and assist facility owners and operators on pollution prevention strategies to reduce the number of new releases of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and petroleum products.
