In 2018, Florida sued 11 corporate entities for their wrongful conduct in the opioid epidemic. The lawsuit proceeded to trial in April 2022 after four years of discovery. All the corporations involved settled before the trial except for Walgreens, which eventually also settled. Walmart, although not sued by the State, approached Florida to negotiate an additional settlement.
The State of Florida and its subdivisions are expected to receive more than $3.1 billion over the next 17 years. The actual future amounts will depend on bankruptcy recoveries and the performance of the entities involved. Additionally, Florida will receive $84 million worth of Naloxone (an opioid reversal drug) over the next 10 years, distributed by Walmart.
Florida will receive three tranches of funding:
1) The State Fund
The State of Florida will receive 45-55% of the settlement funds.
The Florida Opioid Settlement information can be viewed in more detail at the following link: Florida Opioid Settlement
2) Regional Funds
These funds will be made up of 30-40% of the settlement funds and will be paid out through the Florida Department of Financial Services during the 4th quarter of each year.

3) City / County Funds
These funds will be 15% of the settlement funds, and that information broken out can be located at the following link (requires Dropbox): City County funding 18 Year Projections
