BREVARD COUNTY, FL. – More work slated for Mathers Bridge beginning on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, will prompt temporary lane closures and also shutdown pedestrian traffic on the swing span bridge as a concrete sealing project takes place on the landward ends of the bridge system. The work will not pose an issue for boating traffic that passes under the bridge.
Temporary lane closures will be in effect and pedestrian traffic on the sidewalk at Mathers Bridge will be restricted beginning as early as Monday, Sept. 11, as sealing of the concrete deck gets underway. The closures will occur on Monday through Friday for a period of up to two weeks.
The County’s Public Works Department and Florida Drawbridge Inc. are working together on the project. The sidewalks will be closed to pedestrian traffic during the sealing process. Temporary lane closures are also anticipated as the project progresses.
The 700-foot low-level Mathers Bridge, first opened in 1927, connects South Tropical Trail on the southern end of Merritt Island to the western end of Banana River Drive in Indian Harbour Beach.
