MELBOURNE, FL. – Brevard County Natural Resources Management partners with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to unveil the AECOM “Algae Harvesting Ship”.
The vessel’s debut will be marked with a launch event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Front Street Civic Center, located at 2205 Front St. in Melbourne. This event highlights the dedicated efforts of the Save Our Indian River Lagoon program and FDEP in spearheading advanced strategies to address nutrient overload and harmful algal blooms (HAB). Attendees wishing to tour the barge should wear closed toed shoes.
Over the next few months this groundbreaking vessel, designed to combat algae in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), will be mobilized to hot spot areas in the lagoon to demonstrate how it can remove algae and nutrients from the water to curb growth and prevent future algal blooms.
