Tropical Storm Watch: Now is Not the Time to Pile Limbs, Debris at the Curb

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Due to potential winds, rain and other possible effects from a tropical system that could bring squally weather to Brevard County Sunday evening through Monday, County residents should refrain from trimming trees and piling up yard waste at the curb, although now is a good time to clear stormwater drains and to remove loose debris from your  property.

Brevard County is currently under a tropical storm watch. Property owners are encouraged to visually inspect their home and property. Make any repairs necessary. Check the roof for loose shingles; the gutters and drains to ensure proper drainage; the trees for loose branches; the grounds for debris or items such as lawn furniture or garbage cans that could blow away.

Residents should avoid piling tree limbs up at the curb when it’s too late for pickup to occur. This helps avoid problems once a storm hits of debris becoming airborne or getting into storm drains and blocking the free flow of runoff.

Residents are also encouraged to become familiar with the drainage system in their neighborhoods: where the stormwater drains are located, where there could be problems, who is responsible for maintenance, and how to contact them. To help reduce flooding, residents should make sure storm drains are free of debris so water can flow freely.
