BREVARD COUNTY, FL. -- On October 29, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at Veterans Memorial Park in Merritt Island to celebrate the start of construction for the Veterans Memorial Park Amphitheatre project. Approximately 100 people attended the event, including the District 2 Commissioner, Tom Goodson, who oversees the Merritt Island area. Speakers at the event included Mary Ellen Donner from Brevard Parks and Recreation, Marcus Herman from Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency, Don Pearsall from the Brevard Veterans Council, Donn Weaver from the Veterans Memorial Center, Steve Sergis from Ivey’s Construction, Sheriff Wayne Ivey, and Senator Debbie Mayfield.
The Veterans Memorial Park Amphitheatre vision began through a partnership between the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department, the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency, and the Brevard Veterans Council in 2016. In August 2024, the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners approved the remaining $1.23 million in construction costs through a Tourist Development Council grant.
The Amphitheatre design features a 2,100 sq. ft. open-air stage, and a tiered lawn seating area with a capacity of 2,350 attendees, complemented by an adjacent overflow lawn area.
